Fungal Nails

Painful, discolored, thickened or disfigured toenails?

You may have a fungal infection (Onychomycosis). Caused by the same fungi that cause athlete’s foot. Fungal nail infections can be a real nuisance and can lead to further health problems. Unlike athlete’s foot which can usually be sorted out in a week with a cream, powder or spray, fungal nails can be notoriously difficult to resolve.

Having multiple treatment options under one roof means we are best placed to meet your needs; “Hot” Laser, “Cold” Laser, Nail removal and topical products are all available to help manage those difficult, fungal toenails.

Treat with confidence – We start by confirming the diagnosis.
A simple, painless, accurate test ensures anti-fungal treatment is only used when appropriate.

Not all nails that are discoloured or thickened are fungally infected. We can provide cosmetic solutions if your test results aren’t what you expected and the changes in your nails are not due to a fungal infection.

What if I do have a fungal nail infection?

Onychomycosis is a fungal infection of the toe nails. It is a very common condition and is estimated to infect at least 10% of the worldwide population. Until recently, sufferers of onychomycosis had few options for safely, effectively and successfully treating the condition.

Lunula™ laser is revolutionary low-level laser device, effective for safely treating fungal nails (onychomycosis).

Treatment involves passing 2 separate lasers through the nails at different wavelengths without causing damage to the nail or surrounding skin. The lasers help to break down fungal spores that live in and under the nails.

To ensure you get the most from your treatment, we include as standard 12 months of nail care to reduce the risk of cross or reinfection

Advantages of Lunula™:

K-Laser™ was founded over 30 years ago, and is the culmination of research and development, in unison with medical professionals.

Is it painful?
Patients may experience some discomfort during treatment, although this is not usually described as “painful”. As a patient-led treatment, your Podiatrist will ask you if you’re experiencing any discomfort during your treatment and can adjust the treatment to suit your requirements.

Advantages of K-Laser™:

Nail removal is one way to manage persistent fungal nail infections (It is also frequently used to treat ingrowing toenails or nails that are unmanageable and causing pain).

Depending upon the desired outcome, the underlying nail matrix can be treated with a liquid to help prevent the offending nail regrowing; however, the nail is often allowed to regrow where the reason for removal is a fungal infection without additional complications. The procedure is usually carried out under local anaesthetic.

Topicals

This refers to products that are applied directly to the nail. The product needs to penetrate the nail to be effective which, combined with the fact that a toenail will typically take 12 – 18 months to “grow through” can make this less effective than other methods. However, there are some advantages that make it worth considering.

Advantages of using topical antifungals:

Ultimately not all options are right for everyone and your Podiatrist will help you find the solution that best fits your needs, from a medical, time and convenience perspective.
