Fungal Nail Infections

Fungal toenail infections, also known as onychomycosis, occur when fungi invade the toenail, causing it to become discolored, thickened, brittle, and sometimes distorted. The infection usually starts at the edge of the nail and can spread deeper into the nail bed if left untreated. Fungal infections are more common in toenails than fingernails due to the dark, moist environment inside shoes, which is ideal for fungal growth. The primary cause of fungal toenail infections is exposure to fungi, often from walking barefoot in damp environments like public showers, swimming pools, or locker rooms. The fungi thrive in warm, moist conditions and can enter the toenail through small cracks or injuries. Other risk factors include poor circulation, a weakened immune system, diabetes, or wearing tight-fitting shoes that trap moisture and restrict blood flow. Age is another contributing factor, as older adults tend to have reduced blood flow and drier nails, making them more susceptible to infection.

Treatment for fungal toenail infections

Treatment for fungal toenail infections can vary based on the severity of the condition. Over-the-counter antifungal creams, ointments, or nail lacquers may help in mild cases, but they are often less effective for more stubborn infections. Oral antifungal medications, such as terbinafine, are often prescribed for more severe or widespread infections and can be effective in eliminating the fungus from the nail and surrounding tissue. However, these medications can have side effects and require monitoring by a healthcare provider.

Modern technology now provides a solution in the form of laser therapy and nail removal is also an option if the infection is persistent or particularly severe. Preventive measures, such as keeping feet clean and dry, wearing breathable shoes, and trimming nails regularly, can help reduce the risk of fungal infections.

At The Exeter Clinic we routinely assess and assist patients with fungal nails. Further information is available regarding laser therapy on this website or arrange an appointment on (01392) 217333 or book online.
